Getting started#
- Install and pin it. Add the extension, then pin it to the Chrome toolbar so its popup is one click away.
- Sign in. Open the popup and choose Sign in (or Create account). Use the username and password — or the Google account — the project gave you.
- Accept the terms. On your first sign-in the extension shows the Terms of Use and will not open until you accept them. Which version you accepted, and when, is shown afterwards in Settings under Privacy & legal.
- Finish setup. A short one-time questionnaire completes your account. You must be signed in to flag or annotate anything.
- Annotate. On a post, comment, video or chat response, hover it and click Annotate (or press Alt+A). Classify it in the side panel and submit — it syncs on its own.
Finding your way around#
The popup's tabs show the shared work queue and your own past annotations. Above them sits the team you are currently annotating for, and four buttons that apply to the whole extension — hover any of them for its label:
- Power — turns the annotator on and off everywhere, without signing you out.
- ⚙ Settings — opens the full-page settings, where your profile, the privacy toggles and account deletion live.
- ⤢ Full page — opens the workspace in a tab: the items dashboard, review, admin, and export.
- Sign out — ends your session. Work that hasn't been delivered yet stays queued on your machine.
Choosing the project you are working on#
The annotation drawer names the project your work is being filed under, with a caret beside it to change. That choice stays put — across posts, across drawer opens, and across browser restarts — until you change it again, so you set it once at the start of a session rather than on every post. It also decides where a flag is filed, not just an annotation.
It is worth getting right for a second reason: a project can carry its own question set, so switching project can change the questions the drawer asks you. If a project has none of its own it uses the one above it, and failing that your team’s default.
The menu lists the projects a lead has put you on. If it says you are not on any yet, that is not a fault — ask a lead to add you. Team leads see their whole team’s projects.
Keyboard shortcuts#
Every shortcut is Alt-namespaced so it won't collide with the platform's own keys.

Where it runs#
The annotator activates on these sites and nowhere else. On any other page it does nothing at all.

Which of these your team may annotate on is set per team, so the button may be absent on a site the extension supports. A lead can check.
Troubleshooting#
The Annotate button isn't showing
After the extension updates, reload the platform tab — not just the extension. Then check three things: you're signed in, you're on a supported site, and the master switch in the popup is on.
If it's still missing, your team may not be permitted to annotate on that platform. Ask a lead — the permitted list is set per team.
I can't sign in
Confirm your account was authorized by the project. Passwords are case-sensitive. If you've forgotten yours, request a reset link — it goes to the email address on the account and works once. If your account has no email address, contact us and an admin will issue one.
If “Sign in with Google” or “Sign in with Microsoft” fails but a password works, your address is probably outside the organization's single sign-on; use the username and password the project gave you. A Microsoft sign-in that reports needing administrator approval means your own IT department has not yet approved the extension — ask them, not us.
I can sign in but I can't annotate
Your account is flag-only. New accounts start that way on purpose; an admin can move you to a group that can annotate.
My submissions aren't syncing
Annotations queue locally and retry on their own, so a brief outage is nothing to worry about — your work is saved on your device and will be delivered.
If they stay pending, check your connection and that you're still signed in, then reopen the popup to wake the sync. If something is genuinely wrong, the extension will tell you what the service said rather than leave the count sitting there.
The AI buttons say I've hit a limit
The AI pre-annotate and explain buttons are quota-limited per account (5 uses a month by default). That message is the limit working, not a fault — ordinary annotating is unaffected. A lead or admin can raise your allowance.
It is asking me to accept the terms again
Not a fault, and not a sign that anything is wrong with your account. The extension records which version of the Terms of Use you accepted, and when they change materially it asks again rather than treating your continued use as agreement. Nothing is lost while it asks — your queued work stays queued.
The screen names what changed. If you would rather not accept the new terms, close the extension and, if you want, delete your data from Data deletion.
Which terms did I accept, and can you stop naming me?
Open the extension’s Settings and look under Privacy & legal: it names the version you accepted and the date, beside a link to the current text.
Accepting includes permission for the project to say publicly that your organization uses the extension and that you are one of its annotators — and nothing about your individual work. To withdraw that, email ksaiki@addresshate.org; see Being named as a user for what it does and does not cover.
I want to stop it running on one site
The popup has a master switch, and settings hold a per-site preference. Turning the extension off on a site stops it doing anything there; turning off post-view tracking (which is off unless you switched it on) stops the optional coverage counting everywhere.
Privacy and your data#
The Privacy policy sets out exactly what is collected and when — the short version is that nothing leaves your browser until you deliberately annotate or flag something.
